Wind Data Logger

The Wind Data Logger is designed to provide an affordable and easy-to-use solution for wind site evaluation and wind generator performance. It easily supports both simple and complex monitoring applications. The Wind Data Logger records wind speed, gust, and direction, as well as the time and date, temperature, battery voltage, and other important wind parameters. Capable of recording wind speed from up to three anemometers, it is ideal for more complex studies involving multiple wind speed instruments and other sensors.

SD Card

Recording directly to a Secure Digital (SD™) card provides convenient data downloads and stores many months of data at 30 second intervals and years of data at longer logging intervals, resulting in fewer trips to retrieve data from the Wind Data Logger. For your convenience, a new file is created and saved to the card each day.

Using the recorded data is simple. The SD™ card is inserted into a card reader attached to the USB port on your computer (Windows, Macintosh, and Linux) and will then show up as a drive. To view and graph the data, click on the spreadsheet corresponding to the day of interest. Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice.org, or practically any spreadsheet program can be used to view, graph, and analyze your wind data. We also provide web-based software that makes your analysis even easier. Simply upload your data and our software will automatically plot the data as well as provide basic statistics.

Description

  • Adjustable logging interval: The logging interval is adjustable from 10 to 60,000 seconds (16.6 hours) in one-second increments. For most applications, a 60 second interval is ideal.
  • Sensors and Mounting: The wind sensors can be located hundreds of feet away from the Wind Data Logger. APRS World, LLC has a complete line of sensors and mounting solutions. The Wind Data Logger is compatible with almost any type of anemometer including those from NRG Systems and Davis Instruments.
  • Display: A 16-character x 2 line backlit LCD screen displays current information and is used for configuring the data logger. A simple menu-driven interface using the LCD and three front panel buttons makes setup easy. A bright backlight makes the data logger easy to use at night.

  • Power Source: The Wind Data Logger operates directly from any DC voltage source between 7 and 30 volts. Power consumption is approximately 20mA, which allows the Wind Data Logger to be powered from the wall, alkaline batteries, or solar power systems. APRS World, LLC can supply a variety of power options including an AC wall adapter or self-contained and power systems.
  • Clock: An accurate real-time clock is used to time-stamp each measurement. The clock is battery backed and is accurate to within 10 minutes per year or better.
  • Installation: The Wind Data Logger mounts directly to a double gang electrical box for clean installation in a wall or an electrical panel.
  • Communications: An RS-232 serial port is a feature of every Wind Data Logger. This port allows communication with computers and other communication equipment. APRS World has free PC software that can display and log data directly to your computer or our Internet site. Short range wireless links are available now and GSM cell modems will be available soon.

Everything else you need

Wind sensors

APRS World has a complete line of wind sensors that work with the Wind Data Logger. Our most popular choices are the #40R Anemometer and the Wind Vane that we introduced in 2009. For general use, we offer Fascinating Electronics's anemometer. In addition to our anemometers and wind vane, APRS World's Wind Data Logger supports the NRG 1901 hall effect anemometer and their NRG 2551 calibrated hall effect anemometer along with NRG's 1904 wind vane. If your application requires a different type of wind sensor, the Wind Data Logger can be calibrated to accept any switch closure type of anemometer.

Other sensors

Included with each Wind Data Logger package is a temperature sensor. The sensor utilizes a precision integrated circuit temperature measurement device to accurately measure temperatures between -40°C and 100°C (-40°F to 212°F). For other types of sensors, the Wind Data Logger has four 0-5 volt 10-bit inputs. The 0-5 volt inputs can be used to interface to nearly any type of sensor or transducer available. APRS World, LLC offers a variety of other sensors, including light intensity, temperature and relative humidity, voltage, and current. If you need help locating a source for a particular sensor, please feel free to contact us.

Sensor accessories

To make your life easier, APRS World, LLC offers accessories for mounting our wind sensors. Most of our customers mount sensors to tubular meteorological or wind generator towers. For that application we have a durable mounting arm for attaching our sensors to any tower that is between 1.5" and 4.5" in diameter. #40R Solar Outdoor Package

Self-contained packages

APRS World, LLC has self-contained data loggers that are ready to be deployed. Our self-contained packages feature a Wind Data Logger, a power source, and other accessories in an almost indestructible weatherproof case. We offer a solar powered unit and a battery backed AC powered unit as standard configurations. The solar powered data logger can be placed in the harshest conditions to gather wind data. The AC powered logger has eight 'D' cell batteries, which can run the logger for up to 20 days without AC power. In most configurations, the self-contained data logger comes in a single UPS or FedEx shippable box with everything wired and ready to run. Installations usually take less than an hour. We have self-contained data loggers all over the world; from the grassy pastures of Scotland to the peak of a volcano in Chile.

Accessories

To get up and running you will need at least: a Wind Data Logger, an SD™ card, a USB SD™ card reader, one or more sensors, sensor cabling, and a power supply or self-contained data logger. For graphing the data you will probably want a spreadsheet package. If you don't have spreadsheet software on your computer, you can download the free OpenOffice.org software or request a free OpenOffice.org CD with your order.
